New WTO members

From the reading-worthy Political Geography Now blog:
Laos and Tajikistan join WTO.

  1. This is actually really interesting. I think that it is problematic in a way because it may increase the divergence of trade policy interests. At this point, with 159 members, getting a consensus on various WTO Rounds will become an even bigger challenge. I don't think that the WTO should be exclusive to a few countries, however 159 is a large number and considering that in the U.N. the security council members have a hard time coming to a consensus, so will the WTO members. Although, Laos is a communist country so perhaps with China on its side they may come to have some advantages within RTAs.
